Ich bin zurück vom Squam Art Workshops Spring Retreat – und es war genau so herrlich wie die Bilder, die man überall bei Ravelry und auf den Blogs sehen kann. Mehr als 100 Strickerinnen treffen sich in den Rockywold-Deephaven Camps, was man sich so ähnlich vorstellen muss wie das Feriencamp, in dem „Dirty Dancing“ spielt: Es gibt viele gut ausgestattete Holzhäuser, in denen zwischen 2 und 15 Leute schlafen können. Sie liegen schön versteckt zwischen den Bäumen, und die meisten haben einen wunderschönen Blick auf den See. Zum Essen traf man sich im Camp-eigenen Restaurant, das uns schon morgens mit üppigen Blaubeer-Pancakes, Omelette und gebratenem Speck versorgte. Und, am wichtigsten: Kaffee rund um die Uhr!

Vormittags und nachmittags finden verschiedene Kurse in den Hütten statt, die extra für uns wunderhübsch dekoriert wurden:

Ich hatte einen Kurs über verkürzte Reihen bei der Strickdesignerin Gudrun Johnston, der supernützlich war. Wir haben vier verschiedene Methoden gelernt, von denen mir drei gänzlich unbekannt waren, darunter auch die „German Method“, die (aber nicht wegen des Namens!) mein neuer Favorit ist. Und dann habe ich noch einen Kurs bei Stephanie Pearl-McPhee besucht, bei dem es um hilfreiche, aber den meisten Strickerinnen unbekannte Tipps und Tricks ging. Stephanie ist klug und witzig, und das ganze hätte auch als eine Art Stand-up-Comedy für Strickerinnen durchgehen können.

Zwischendurch konnte man sich an den zahlreichen süßen Yarnbombings erfreuen, die überall im Camp zu finden waren, am See entspannen (oder, für die Mutigen: darin schwimmen), Yogakurse besuchen oder Vorträge anhören: Jared Flood hat seine Geschichte erzählt und die neue Brooklyn Tweed Kinderkollektion präsentiert, und Barbara Parry von ihrer Schafsfarm mit eigener Garnproduktion. Ihr Buch Adventures in Yarn Farming: Four Seasons on a New England Fiber Farm gibt einen großartigen Einblick in all die Arbeit, die in unseren Strickgarnen steckt und ist sehr schön bebildert:

Das blaue und das weiße Garn ist mit Wolle von ihren Cormo-Schafen gesponnen und superweich – ich habe es von Squam mit nach Hause gebracht. Denn selbstverständlich gab es dort auch einen wunderbaren Woll-, Accessoire- und Kunsthandwerksmarkt. Barbaras Garn von ihrer „Foxfire Fiber Farm“ war schlicht unwiderstehlich:

Ana von Toil & Trouble hatte einen Hitchhiker aus ihrem knallbunten Garn als Ausstellungsstück dabei:

Ein besonderes Highlight war es für mich, die Ravelry-Mitarbeiter zu treffen und mich mit ihnen auszutauschen – hier ist Mary-Heather (mit ein bisschen Sonnenbrand, den sie sich im See geholt hatte):

Und die Abende am Kaminfeuer mit meinen Hüttengenossinnen Jill, Pat, Carolyn (und noch einer Jill, nicht im Bild) waren total gemütlich:

Auf dem Weg zurück zum Flughafen hat mich die wunderbare Heather noch in eine niedliches Café in ihrer Heimat Boston entführt:

Es war eine großartige Woche, inspirierend, sorglos, voller toller, kreativer Menschen, in unglaublich entspannter Atmosphäre, herrlicher Umgebung und mit leckerem Essen. Und – hach! – sie war natürlich viel zu schnell vorbei. Aber vielleicht schaffe ich es nächstes Jahr wieder dorthin?

I am back from Squam Art Workshops Spring Retreat – and it was just as beautiful as all those pictures that you can see on Ravelry and all the blogs. More than 100 knitters meet at Rockywold-Deephaven Camps, which is sort of like the vacation resort where „Dirty Dancing“ was filmed: Very nice, big wooden cabins that host from 2 to 15, hidden between the trees and most of them with a beautiful view over the lake. The camp has a great restaurant that serves a yummy American Breakfast and coffee around the clock (most important!).

During the mornings and afternoons, there were classes in front of the fireplaces in the cabins, and lovely Elizabeth had decorated them especially for us:

I had a class with knitwear designer Gudrun Johnston that was super useful. She taught us four different techniques (3 of which I had never heard of before), among them the „German Method“ which turned out to be my favorite (despite the name, I should add). And I had a class with Stephanie Pearl-McPhee called „Knitwise“, in which she revealed lots of her secrets as an experienced knitter. She is so clever and funny and could totally pass as a stand-up comedian for knitters. I just sat back, knit on my sock and enjoyed the Stephanie show.

Between classes we had lots of free time to enjoy all the sweet yarn bombings that could found everywhere on the site, relax at the lake (or, if you were brave, swim in it), go to yoga classes or talks like the one by Jared Flood, in which he told us his story and presented a new children’s collection. Barbara Parry did a great slide show about her sheep and fiber farm, and I am full of admiration for the work that she does. Her book Adventures in Yarn Farming: Four Seasons on a New England Fiber Farm is really interesting and has lots of beautiful pictures in it:

The blue and the white yarns are spun with wool from her Cormo sheep, it’s supersoft and beautiful. I brought them home from the Squam Art Marketplace where Barbara had a lovely booth:

It was such a great week – inspiring, laid-back, full of great, creative people, in the most relaxing atmosphere I have ever experienced, beautiful surroundings and great food. And it was over much too fast. But maybe I will manage to be there next year, too?
