Als ich bei Ravelry das hier gesehen habe, musste ich einfach auch eins haben. Dass diese süßen iPhone-Hüllen nicht gestrickt, sondern gehäkelt werden – nun ja. Ich bin ja bisher nicht die größte Häklerin vor dem Herrn. Aber das hat mich so gereizt, dass ich es unbedingt probieren musste. Ich hab ungefähr fünf Anläufe gebraucht, um richtige Größe mit unelastischem Baumwollgarn hinzukriegen, da fehlt mir dann doch die Erfahrung. Und so fest zu häkeln ist schon ein bisschen anstrengend – aber macht schon auch Spaß. Und hier mein Ergebnis:

When I saw this on Ravelry, I just had to have one. When I saw that it was crocheted rather than knit, I decided to give it a go anyway. It took me about five times to get the size right, because I used a very inelastic cotton yarn. But now, I am very pleased with the result. And actually considering doing more crochet in the future!

Nun ist es passiert: 2011 bin ich Strickdesignerin geworden. Woher ich das weiß? Nun, das Finanzamt findet, ich muss ab sofort Umsatzsteuer zahlen! Da bei meinen Anleitungsverkäufen auch immer noch ein saftiger Anteil als Gebühr an Paypal geht (35 bis 40 Cent pro Pattern), werde ich meine Preise einen kleinen Tick erhöhen müssen. Aber nur so viel, dass das, was für mich übrig bleibt, das gleiche bleibt. Damit ich weiterhin Zeit habe, neue Designs zu entwickeln! Ich hoffe auf Euer Verständnis. Und ich danke allen, die mich im vergangenen Jahr mit Anleitungskäufen unterstützt haben. Ihr seid klasse!

Now it has happened. I am officially a knitwear designer. How do I know? Well, the German Tax Authority thinks I should start to pay sales taxes right now. So, unfortunately, I will have to raise my pattern prices just a little bit – considering that Paypal also takes a hefty part of my revenue (35 to 40 Cents per pattern). This little raise in prices makes sure I can continue to work on new patterns instead other money-earning activities. I hope you understand! And I would like to thank all knitters who have supported my designing activities by purchasing my patterns. You are wonderful!

Hitchhat

Irgendwie brauchte ich dann doch eine Mütze, die zum Hitchhiker passt. Und sich schnell stricken lässt und in Wollmeise gut aussieht. Und hier ist sie:

Heute brachte der Postmann ein kleines, schweres Päckchen. Er kam durch dickes Schneegestöber, und ich stand draußen und guckte meinen Kindern beim Schneeballwerfen zu. Und seht mal, was drin war:

Das erste Exemplar meines Anleitungsbüchleins, das ich bei Bod (Books on Demand) in Auftrag gegeben hatte. Ich fand nämlich, dass es schön wäre, wenn auch Strickerinnen, die keinen Internetzugang haben, meine Anleitungen bekommen könnten. Und das klappt jetzt: Das Büchlein enthält auf 36 Farbseiten die deutschsprachigen Anleitungen für Hitchhiker, Lintilla, Trillian, Magrathea und Nuvem plus zwei Foto-Tutorials für Wickelmaschen und Judy’s Magic Cast-on (Danke, Judy!*) und ist für 12,90 im Buchhandel zu haben (ISBN: 978-3-8448-0581-9). Look what the postman brought today: The first copy of my little pattern booklet that I decided to offer specifically to the internet-less knitters here in Germany. I am sorry to say that so far, it’s only available in German, because the service I use (“Books on Demand”) is located here in Germany and makes books available to bookstores and LYS, skipping the need for working with a big publishing house. I also have the impression that knitters in the English-speaking world are more internet literate and more likely to have access to it and are doing okay with the patterns I am providing online. But I will certainly look into offering something similar internationally – if you have any useful suggestions, please let me know!

Sunny Hitch

Meinem Sohn ist seine “We call em Pirates”-Mütze zu klein geworden. Darum durfte er sich eine Farbe für eine neue aussuchen, und das hier ist dabei herausgekommen: Wollmeise Twin, Farbe “Sonne”. Eigentlich sollte es “Tummelum” von Susanne Reese werden, aber ich habe die Anleitung falsch gelesen und die Mustersätze nach jeder Runde gewechselt. Das Ergebnis ist aber trotzdem schön geworden. Mit passendem Hitchhiker (32 Zacken) dazu. Er trägt diese Kombi jeden Tag zur Schule und ist sehr glücklich damit (auch wenn’s auf diesem Bild vielleicht nicht so aussieht!):

My son declared that his “We call ‘em Pirates”-hat had become too tight. So I let him pick a color for a new one, and he chose “Sonne” (Wollmeise Twin). A very good see-me-color for winter. I started out using the “Tummelum” pattern by Susanne Reese, but I misread the pattern and changed the repeat sections too often. Turned out nicely, anyway! I also made him a matching Hitchhiker (32 teeth) and he has been wearing this combo every day since I finished it. He seems to be quite happy with it, although it does not exactly show in the picture!

2 x Joanie

Seht mal, was mir bei der Knit Night letzte Woche begegnet ist:

Anja (Jovina auf Ravelry) hat diesen wunderschönen Joanie-Pulli gestrickt, mit Garn aus der Hamburger Wollfabrik. Es war toll, mal einem nach meiner Anleitung (und nicht von mir) gestrickten Pulli live zu begegnen, und dann auch noch einem so gelungenen Exemplar!

Look, this is Anja (Jovina on Ravelry) wearing her more-than-beautiful Joanie sweater (the yarn is Hamburger Wollfabrik). I met her last week at knit night, and it was pure luck that I was wearing my Joanie as well. The two sweaters became best friends instantaneously, as you can see in the picture!

Fast Food

Manchmal braucht die Strickerin was Schnelles, leicht Verdauliches. Fast Food zum Stricken, sozusagen. Und wem das gerade so geht, dem sei die Mütze “Unoriginal Hat” von Stephanie Pearl-McPhee allerwärmstens ans Herz gelegt. Schön, warm, Erfolgserlebnis garantiert – und nach wenigen Stunden fertig!

Sometimes a knitter needs something quick that’s easy to digest. Knitterly fast food. And for all knitters in the need of knitterly fast food, I highly recommend the “Unoriginal Hat” pattern by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. It is a quick, pretty, instant gratification project that only takes a couple of hours. Thanks, Stephanie!

Mojo

Mein Strick-Mojo ist zurzeit etwas wackelig. Ich stricke gerade Spina di Pesce, (allerdings aus Wollmeise “Vergissmeinnicht” in Twin), die ich wunderschön finde, aber ich bin sehr langsam, mache dauernd Fehler und muss wieder ribbeln.

Zum Stricktreff hatte ich glatt die Anleitung zuhause vergessen und mich dann bärig gefreut, dass eine Mitstrickerin die Anleitung auf ihrem Smartphone gespeichert hatte. Aber erst später viel mir auf, dass ich die Zwickel-Zunahmen an der falschen Stelle hatte, also wieder ribbeln und von vorn. Eigentlich wäre mir gerade eher nach einer schnell gestrickten Mütze mit dicken Zöpfen, oder fingerlosen Handschuhen in bunten Rippen. Darum gucke ich stundenlang bei Ravelry rum und finde dabei aber nichts, was meinen Vorstellungen hundertprozent entspricht. Was dann normalerweise passiert: Ich denk mir was eigenes aus. Und dann wäre das Mojo ganz bestimmt wieder zurück.

Immerhin hat es schon mal dafür gereicht, die Skew-Socken fertig zu stricken:

Ich hatte sie auch schon oft an, weil sie so gut zu meinem Lintilla-Tuch passen. (Ja genau: Socken zum Tuch. Ist das jetzt wieder so ein Strickerinnen-Spleen?)

My knitting mojo is still a little shaky right now. I am making Spina di Pesce (out of Wollmeise Twin “Vergissmeinnicht”) which I think are really beautiful and cleverly designed, but I am awfully slow, make lots of mistakes and have to rip back frequently. On Sunday I even forgot to bring the pattern to our knit ‘n sip, but luckily a fellow knitter had stored the pattern on her smartphone (oh, modern times and gadgets! Gotta love ‘em!). But later I discovered that I had done the gusset increases in the wrong places, so I had to rip back again. And actually, I feel like I would rather knit a big, cable-y hat or some pretty handwarmers in corrugated ribbing. So I keep browsing patterns and cannot really find any that match my imagination. When this happens, I usually go ahead and make up my own. So, maybe, the mojo is about to return…

I also finished my Skew socks, which I love because their color matches my Lintilla shawlette (yes, I have reached the point of knitterly craziness where I think that a shawlette should match my socks).

Skew

Ich war sehr still hier in letzter Zeit, sorry dafür! Mir ist am gleichen Tag, als ich die Anleitung für “Nuvem” fertig geschrieben habe, die Kinderbetreuung komplett zusammengebrochen – ich musste alles neu organisieren, meine Tochter in ihre neue Kita eingewöhnen, nachträglich einen Vorschulplatz für den Großen besorgen, zwischendrin mich mit der alten Kita und dem Elternvorstand auseinandersetzen. Alles sehr, sehr kräftezehrend. Fürs Stricken war nicht allzu viel Raum, auch wenn ich zwischendrin doch noch meinen lange zuvor gebuchten 4-Tage-Urlaub an der Ostsee machen konnte. Darum hab ich einfach meine vor langer Zeit begonnene Skew-Socken weitergestrickt: Eine großartige Anleitung, in der unglaublich viel Hirnschmalz und kreatives Um-die-Ecke-Denken steckt. Allerdings muss man schon gewaltig aufpassen, beim Stricken nichts Wichtiges zu verpassen. Also eigentlich zu anstrengend, wenn das Leben gerade anstrengend ist. Aber bald bin ich fertig, und dann hab ich ein paar tolle, warme, super passende Socken in meiner Lieblingsfarbe (“Roter Himbeermund, Wollmeise Twin), genau rechtzeitig fürs kalte Wetter. Und das ist hier die erste gute Nachricht seit Wochen. Aber ab nächsten Montag, wenn mein Sohn zumindest vormittags in der Vorschule ist, hab ich wieder mehr Freiraum. Für die Arbeit, fürs Stricken, fürs Designen. Freu mich schon sehr darauf.

I have been very silent around here, and I am sorry for that! On the same day that I published “Nuvem” my whole system of daycare for the kids broke down. I had to organize something new for both children. Luckily, I could still find a spot for my son at a pre-school nearby (although pre-school started back in August), but he will start there only next week, and all spots that included lunch and afternoon activities were already taken. So he will be home by 1 every day (instead of 4), which almost cuts my workday in half. For my daughter, I found a lovely tiny daycare center that’s open until 2.30 pm, and she has been going there for three weeks now and quite likes it. In between I have been arguing with the old daycare center and the parents’ organization, which occupied my mind quite a bit. Not much room for knitting or being creative, although I have been able to take my little 4-day vacation that I had booked a long time before this crisis happened. So I just knit on something I started a while ago: Skew, which is an extremely clever and innovative pattern, which I enjoy although I really need to peek into the pattern every five minutes to make sure I am not missing anything. So, not really as mindless a project as I would actually need right now. But I will be done really soon, and I will have a new pair of warm, pretty and pink socks (“Roter Himbeermund, Wollmeise Twin) that fit really well and come just in time before it gets cold outside. And that will be the first good news in almost 6 weeks. Next Monday, my son will start Pre-School, and that will give me at least a couple of hours per day to work, knit and be creative. I am really looking forward to it.

Nuvem

Ich wollte eine Stola, eine, die einfach groß und warm ist und zu allem passt. Unkompliziert, geeignet für bunte Wolle, und nach Möglichkeit ohne all die linken Maschen, die man auf den Rückreihen immer stricken muss. Also hab ich das hier gemacht, und ich bin richtig happy darüber:

Nuvem

Sie ist 1,70 m lang, reicht also von Hand zu Hand, wenn ich sie quer über die Schultern lege. Und mit 75 cm Breite wärmt sie dann auch noch den Rücken. Einmal längs gefaltet ist sie ein prima Riesenschal:

I wanted a big, soft stole that would go with everything. Nothing complicated, suitable for multicolored yarn, something to go with everything. And preferably without purl stitches. So I came up with Nuvem, and I am extraordinarily happy with it! It is 1,70m long and covers my hands when I throw it over my shoulders. Being 75cm wide, it also warms my back. And it makes a beautiful, big scarf when folded lengthwise. Winter, I am not afraid of you!
