Und hier ist sie, die vierte Garnlieferantin für den Strickmich! Club 2019: Maike Schnichels mit ihrer Garnkollektion „Skudderia“. Skudden heißen nämlich die kleinen Schafe, die Maike bei ihrer Werkstatt in der Nähe von Frankfurt hält – aus ganz praktischen Gründen: „Wir haben hier ein Grundstück, das sich sehr schlecht mähen lässt. Irgendwo hatte ich diese Schafe mit den hübschen Hörnen gesehen, und seitdem leben ein paar davon bei uns“, erzählt Maike.
Fasern zu färben hat Maike schon in ihrer Ausbildung zur Frisörin gelernt. „Das hat mir immer schon am meisten Spaß gemacht: Farben zu finden, die den Leuten gut stehen und sie zu beraten.“ In ihrem kleinen Frisörsalon in Frankfurt-Bornheim fing Maike in der Teeküche an, Garne zu färben, die sie dann auch in ihrem Laden anbot. Dort sah es dann bald aus wie in einem Wollgeschäft, „in dem auch noch ein Frisierstuhl stand“, sagt Maike. „Am Anfang habe ich sehr bunt gefärbt, immer ganz viele Farben auf einem Strang. Aber dann habe ich mich unter Strickerinnen umgehört: Was gefällt Euch, was braucht ihr?“ Es stellte sich heraus, dass ein großer Bedarf an schön kombinierbaren Semisolids da war, aus denen man Tücher, aber auch Pullis und Jacken stricken konnte, und so konzentrierte sich Maike darauf. „Ich stelle supergerne Garn-Sets aus verschiedenen Farben zusammen und helfe dabei, die richtige auszusuchen“, sagt sie. Wer ihren Stand auf einem Wollmarkt besucht, kann diesen Service live erleben – und in Farben schwelgen, immer gefärbt auf schönen, besonderen Naturgarnen, darunter auch Exotisches wie Lamawolle oder ein Leinen-Alpaka-Mix in Lacegarnstärke. Bewacht wird der Skudderia-Stand von Maikes belgischem Schäferhund Egon, „der kommt immer mit, der gehört dazu!“, sagt Maike.

Maike selbst strickt natürlich am liebsten Projekte, bei denen sie mehrere ihrer selbstgefärbten Garne kombinieren kann: „Am liebsten Tücher, die kann ich auch gut auf Märkte mitnehmen – an Pullover traue ich mich noch nicht so richtig heran…“ Ihre Lieblingsfarben sind Blautöne, „von Türkis über helles Mint bis zum Pazifikblau“, aber auch mit Herbstfarben wie Senf, Rotbraun oder Hellgrün kann sie etwas anfangen.
Im Sommer 2018 hat Maike zwei wichtige Entscheidungen getroffen: Den kleinen Frisörsalon hat sie geschlossen, um sich ganz aufs Wollefärben zu konzentrieren, und ihre Garnmarke trägt den neuen Namen „Skudderia“. Davor bot sie ihre Färbungen als „Das Regenbogenschaf“ an, und das passte nicht mehr richtig: „Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich mich weiterentwickelt habe und aus dem Niedlichen rausgewachsen bin“, sagt Maike.
Und so freuen wir uns im Strickmich! Club sehr, dass Maike sich entschieden hat, diesen neuen Abschnitt in ihrem Färberinnenleben mit einem exklusiv gefärbten Strang ihres tollen Garns für den Strickmich! Club zu feiern. Wir sind gespannt!

So here she is, the fourth yarnie for Strickmich! Club 2019: Maike Schnichels and her yarn collection „Skudderia“. Skudde is the name of a rare middle European sheep breed, and Maike happens to have five of them grazing in the meadow behind her dyeing studio close to Frankfurt – for obvious reasons: „It’s really hard to mow here, and I had seen these pretty sheep with their spectacular horns, so I decided to get a couple of them“, Maike said.
Maike learnt to dye during her training as a hairdresser. „That has always been the fun part: Finding the colors that look good on people and help them choose.“ In her little salon in Frankfurt-Bornheim, she started dyeing yarns in the small kitchenette in the back. It did not take long until her salon looked more like a yarn store with a hairdresser’s chair in the middle. „When I started out, I used lots and lots of colors on each skein. But then I started talking to knitters and asked them what they would like and need“, Maike said. It turned out that many knitters were asking for hand dyed semisolids that were easy to combine and useful for making large shawls and garments, so Maike went on to specialize in those. „I really enjoy making kits out of differently colored yarns and I love to help knitters find the ones that suit them best“, she said. If you happen to visit her booth at a fiber festival, she will help you pick the right colors for your project among a wall of beautiful colors, all dyed on special yarns made from natural fibers, among them exotic ones like Llama fiber or a lace yarn out of linen and alpaca.

Maike obviously loves to knit projects that make use of several shades of her hand dyed yarns: „I love shawls, they are easy to take to fiber fests and show them to customers. I would love to knit garments, but I have lots of respect for those and have not really found my way to start one…“ Her favorite colors to knit with are blues and teals: „Turquoise, mint, bright pacific blue – that’s what I love most, but now in the fall I also like mustard, a rusty brown and bright green“, Maike said.
In Summer 2018 Maike made two important decisions: She closed her little salon to focus entirely on dyeing yarn, and she renamed her brand „Skudderia“. Until then, she used to offer her creations as „Regenbogenschaf“ („The Rainbow Sheep“), but she felt this name was not a good fit anymore: „I have learnt a lot as a dyer and developed my signature style, and I felt that I had grown out of the cuteness that the old name suggested“, Maike said.

Strickmich! Club 2019: SweetGeorgia

Felicia Lo ist eine der ganz Großen in der Welt der handgefärbten Garne: „SweetGeorgia“ steht auf der ganzen Welt für intensive, leuchtend-faszinierende Farben, die schon von weitem ganz eindeutig Felicias Handschrift tragen. „Meine Lieblingsfarben sind Pink, Lila und dunkle Beerentöne – immer, wenn ich nach Garn für ein Strickprojekt greife, ist es garantiert eine dieser Farben“, sagt Felicia. „Aber beim Färben machen mir eigentlich alle Farben Spaß!“ In ihrer Färbewerkstatt in Vancouver (Kanada) gehören satte 85 Nuancen zum Standardprogramm, die sie je nach Jahreszeit um limitierte Saisonfarben erweitert. Spinnfasern, Anleitungen und Kurse bietet sie ebenfalls an, seit einem Jahr auch online mit ihrer „School of SweetGeorgia“: „Menschen zu helfen, ihre Kreativität mit Stricken, Weben oder Spinnen zu entfalten – das ist mir sehr wichtig, und das ist im Moment mein Schwerpunkt“, sagt Felicia.

Bevor Felicia sich hauptberuflich Garnen, Fasern und Farben widmete, studierte sie Pharmazie. „Für diesen Studiengang musste man sehr gute Noten haben, und ich habe mich angestrengt, um einen Platz zu bekommen – aber schon am ersten Tag, als ich in der Vorlesung saß, wusste ich: das ist nichts für mich“, erzählt sie, „ich hab da irgendwie nicht reingepasst.“ Dennoch studierte sie weiter, fünf Jahre lang, und machte ihren Abschluss, denn es war der Wunsch ihrer Eltern. Felicias Kreativität fand aber auch in dieser Zeit ihr Ventil: „Ich war Mitglied eines Tanzsport-Teams und habe meine eigenen Kostüme genäht, in leuchtenden Farben und immer sehr auffällig, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Kampfrichter zu gewinnen“, erzählt sie. Sie übernahm irgendwann auch die Gestaltung der Webseite der Tanztruppe, besuchte an der Uni Kurse zum Thema Grafikdesign, und hatte nach Abschluss ihres Studiums bereits mehrere Auftraggeber.
Stricken und Handarbeiten waren immer Teil ihres Lebens: „Mit 10 oder 11 habe ich stricken gelernt und war nicht mehr davon abzubringen! In der 7. Klasse habe ich meinen ersten Pulli gestrickt“, berichtet Felicia. Bald entdeckte sie auch die Nähmaschine. „Erst nach der Uni habe ich wieder mit dem Stricken angefangen und mit Garn und Farben zu spielen, und seit 2004 darüber gebloggt.“ Ihren Blog nannte sie „SweetGeorgia“: Georgia, weil die Halbinsel, auf der Vancouver liegt, von der Georgiastraße umgeben ist, und „Sweet“, weil es darin ursprünglich mal ums Backen gehen sollte. „Ich konnte mir damals gut vorstellen, irgendwann mal eine kleine Bäckerei aufzumachen“, sagt sie – aber zum Glück für uns Strickerinnen kam es ganz anders!

Mit dem Handfärben hat sie aus einem ganz einfachen Grund begonnen: „Ich konnte mir all die tollen handgefärbten Garne nicht leisten!“ Das war im Frühling 2005, im Herbst bot sie schon ihre Garne in einem Etsy-Shop an, und kurz darauf baute sie sich ihren eigenen Online-Shop. Ihre Garne waren sofort sehr gefragt, auch Wollgeschäfte wollten sie im Programm haben. „Das wurde schnell zu viel: Ich habe 7 Tage die Woche gearbeitet, alles vom Färben bis zum Etikettieren selbst gemacht und hatte auch noch Grafikdesign-Aufträge, die ich bearbeiten musste… Ich war völlig ausgebrannt.“ Darum klinkte sie sich für ein Jahr aus allem aus und überlegte, wie sie ihre Leidenschaft fürs Färben so umsetzen konnte, dass die Belastung überschaubar blieb. Sie machte einen Plan, holte sich Helfer, arbeitete mit einer systematischen Farbpalette und begrenzte erst einmal die Zahl der Wiederverkäufer – und von da an lief es besser.
Heute verbringt Felicia immer noch sehr viel Zeit im Färbestudio, aber auch mit ihren zwei Kindern. Den Freitagnachmittag hat sie sich für große Projekte wie Spinnen oder Weben reserviert, und was sie da so treibt, ist in ihrem Videoblog (Youtube-Link) zu sehen. Und stricken? „Das mache ich abends, wenn ich mit meinem Mann zusammensitze!“ Fünf Pullis hat sie allein in diesem Jahr schon gestrickt, darunter mehrere mit mehrfarbiger Rundpasse. „Mein liebstes Pulligarn ist ein etwas dickerer Mohair-Seidenmix – damit dauert das Stricken nicht so lange!“ Edle Garne mit einem gewissen Schimmer sind typisch für SweetGeorgia, und eines davon haben wir für den Strickmich! Club 2019 ausgesucht.

Felicia Lo is one of the big names in the world of hand dyed yarns: „SweetGeorgia“ is synonymous with intense, brilliant and fascinating colors – Felicia’s signature style. „My favorite colors are pinks, purples and plums – whenever I pick up a skein of yarn for a project, it’s one of those!“ she said, „but when I am dyeing yarn, all the colors are fun!“ A whopping 85 colors are the standard repertoire of her dyeing studio in Vancouver, Canada. Small collections of limited seasonal colors are added every couple of months. In her online store, you can also buy hand dyed spinning fibers, knitting patterns and online classes through her latest project „School of SweetGeorgia“. „I feel very strongly about helping people to explore their creativity by teaching them the skills they need to knit, weave or spin“, Felicia said, „so that’s my focus right now.“

Before yarns, fibers and colors became her profession, Felicia studied pharmaceutical science. „You had to have very good grades to get in, and I worked really hard to achieve that“, she said. „But on the very first day in the very first lecture, I already had a feeling that it was not for me. I just felt that I did not fit in“ she said. But Felicia did not want to disappoint her parents, so she pulled through and finished her degree after five years. During that time, her creativity found other ways to bloom: She joined a competitive ballroom dancing community and was soon making her own ball gowns and costumes, „in very bright colors as to capture the judges‘ attention“, she said. She soon adopted the university Dance Club’s website, took a couple of classes in graphic design, and when she finished university, she had a number of design clients.
Knitting and crafting have always been part of her life: „I started to knit in grade 5 or 6 and became obsessed with it. I knit my first sweater in grade 7 but then switched to sewing because it was faster“, Felicia said. „After university I picked up knitting again, playing with yarn and colors, and began to blog about it in 2004“, she said. She named her blog „SweetGeorgia“: „Georgia“ from the Strait of Georgia (the water surrounding Vancouver Island), and „Sweet“ because she had actually planned to write about something else: „I had thought that I might one day open a bakery and wanted to name it SweetGeorgia, so that’s what I named the blog. But then the blog ended up being all posts about my knitting projects and so I dropped the baking and kept the name.“ Lucky for us knitters!

Felicia started hand dyeing yarns for a a simple reason: „I saw all these beautiful yarns in yarn stores and I just could not afford them“ she recalled. And when she started spinning and only white fiber was available, she took the plunge and started dyeing fiber as well. That was back in 2005, and she soon had too much yarn to ever knit up herself, so she started putting it up on Etsy and built her own online shop. Her yarns were an instant success, she even had a couple of wholesale accounts, but it soon became too much: „I was working 7 days a week, I still had graphic design work to do, and I was doing everything myself from the dyeing to the labeling to taking everything to the post office every day. I was completely burnt out“, Felicia said. So she decided to take a break from everything, to clear her head and re-evaluate. She made a plan and re-started her dyeing operation, this time with a pre-set color palette. She hired help and did not take on wholesale accounts right away, so everything would grow and bloom at a more gentle pace.
Today Felicia still loves to develop new colorways, but she also spends a lot of time with her two kids. Friday afternoons are reserved for big crafting projects like spinning or weaving, and you can watch her doing that on her weekly vlog (youtube-link). But what about knitting? „I knit a lot, every night when I am with my husband“, Felicia said. This year alone, she has finished five sweaters, a couple of them with stranded yokes. „My favorite yarn for a sweater is a DK weight blend of silk and mohair. It has a beautiful shine but knits up quickly“, she said. Lovely, shiny yarn bases are SweetGeorgia’s signature, and we picked one of those to be a yarn for Strickmich! Club 2019.

Strickmich! Club 2019: BC Garn

Die Garne von BC Garn aus Dänemark haben für mich eine besondere Bedeutung: Mein erstes (und bisher auch einziges!) Pulloverdesign habe ich aus BC Garn gestrickt, und es wurde auch gleich auf Knitty.com veröffentlicht („Joanie“) – eine besondere Ehre für junge Designer. Und jedes Mal, wenn ich in Hamburg in meinem Lieblingswollgeschäft stöberte, zogen mich die hübschen Stränge von BC Garn an: glänzende oder matte Seide, superweiche Schurwolle von nach Öko-Standards gehaltenen Schafen und zertifizierte Bio-Baumwolle. Immer in einer riesigen Farbpalette, die von skandinavisch-pastelligen bis hin zu kräftig-bunten Farben reicht.

„BC“ lauten die Initialen des Gründers Bo Carstensen, der die kleine Marke schon 1972 ins Leben rief. Die Liebe zu Garnen hat er ganz sicher von seiner Mutter: Die war leidenschaftliche Weberin, aber mit den Garnen und Farben, die es damals auf dem Markt gab, unzufrieden. Acryl war damals schwer angesagt und schöne Naturgarne, die ihren Ansprüchen genügten, nur schwer zu finden. Also ließ sie Wolle und andere Naturfasern speziell für ihre Arbeiten spinnen und färben. Über Bos Vater, der mit Teppichwolle handelte, wusste sie, welche Spinnereien dafür in Frage kamen.

Ihr Sohn Bo machte daraus ein Familienunternehmen, nahm bald auch Handstrickgarne hinzu, und blieb 45 Jahre lang konsequent bei seinem Fokus auf Naturfasern: Polyamid-Beimischungen muss man im BC-Garn-Sortiment bis heute mit der Lupe suchen. Bo arbeitete mit kleinen Spinnereien aus ganz Europa zusammen, um seine Garnträume wahr werden zu lassen, wie zum Beispiel beim Wollgarn „Yorkshire“: „Dieses Garn erinnert mich an meine Kindheit. Meine Eltern haben immer mit englischen Garnen gearbeitet. Und als ich dann selbst Garne entwickelte, wollte ich unbedingt eines machen, das so ist, wie die, die ich von früher kenne“, sagt Bo.

Als Bo und seine Frau Marianne vor zwei Jahren das dänische Rentenalter erreichten, suchten sie jemand, der ihre Marke übernimmt und weiterführt: Mit nordeuropäischem Charakter und einem Fokus auf natürlichen Garnen und Farben, wenn möglich in Bio-Qualität und auch zertifiziert. Und in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wurden sie fündig: Britta Kremke, bekennende Genussstrickerin und Luxus-Garn-Liebhaberin, erfahrene Garnhändlerin und -entwicklerin, war Bos Traumkandidatin.
Wie Bo wuchs auch Britta von Wolle umgeben auf: Ihre Mutter hatte ein Wollgeschäft, mit 8 Jahren häkelte sie ihren ersten Pulli, und nachdem sie mit 21 ihre Banklehre beendet hatte, konnte sie es kaum erwarten, in die Woll-Welt zurückzukehren. Sie übernahm ein Wollgeschäft, hatte damals aber mit dem Rückgang des Strick-Trends zu kämpfen und musste es erst einmal wieder aufgeben. Ein Studium folgte, dann arbeitete sie in einer Marketingagentur in Ostdeutschland. In dieser Zeit gab es so manche Strick-Pause, denn „hier auf dem Land konnte man in den 90ern einfach keine schöne Wolle kaufen! Dafür habe ich mir immer von meinen Reisen Garne mitgebracht“, sagt sie.
Brittas Lieblingsgarn aus dem BC Garn-Sortiment: Tussah Tweed, ein rustikales Seidengarn
Irgendwann kamen Online-Wollshops auf – die waren Brittas Rettung. Und brachten sie nach kurzer Zeit auf die Idee, selbst einen zu gründen: Mit Luxusgarnen von Alpaka bis Kaschmir, „lauter Garne, mit denen ich selbst gerne stricken wollte“, erzählt sie. Bald begann Britta, schöne Garne aus aller Welt zu importieren und als Großhändlerin andere Wollgeschäfte zu beliefern. Die eigene Marke „Kremke Soul Wool“ mit von ihr erdachten und entwickelten Garnen kam später hinzu. Schöne Fasern auszusuchen, mit kleinen Spinnereien zusammenzuarbeiten, immer den Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit im Kopf, und alles im Hinblick auf ein angenehmes, luxuriöses Strickerlebnis – dafür hat Britta ein glückliches Händchen. BC Garn-Gründer Bo Carstensen hat sie damit so beeindruckt, dass er ihr sehr gerne sein „Baby“ überließ und Britta ihre Talente seit Frühjahr 2018 für BC Garn einsetzen darf. Eine große Aufgabe, aber auch eine sehr reizvolle: „BC Garn hat ein klares, eigenes Gesicht, bodenständig, aber sehr ästhetisch – darum mache ich das sehr gern“, sagt Britta. Ideen, wie es weiter gehen soll, hat sie schon: neue, dem strengen Öko-Standard GOTS entsprechende Garnlinien sollen hinzukommen, dazu schafsrassenspezifische Wollgarne, „alles sehr natürlich, weg vom superwash“. Wir sind gespannt!

The yarns by BC Garn from Denmark are really special to me: My first (and only!) sweater design was made out of BC Garn, and it was published on Knitty.com („Joanie“), which is a special honor for any designer, especially when starting out. Every time I was browsing the shelves of my favorite yarn store in Hamburg, the pretty BC Garn skeins caught my attention: shiny or matte silk, soft wools from happy sheep and certified organic cotton. Always in an amazing color palette from Scandinavian pastels to bright and deep jewel tones.

„BC“ are the initials of BC Garn founder Bo Carstensen who started his company in 1972. His love for yarns was a family matter: His mother was a passionate weaver, but she did not like the yarns that were available at the time. Acrylic yarns were all the rage, and it was hard to find beautiful yarns from natural fibers that were up to her standards. So she had wool and other fibers custom spun and dyed for her work. Bo’s father, who was in the business of trading coarse wools for carpets, knew where to find spinning mills that were up to the task.

Out of this, Bo grew his business. He added handknitting yarns and stayed true to his focus on natural fibers for 45 years: It’s very hard to find any added polyamide in BC Garn’s range up to this day. Bo worked with small spinning mills all over Europe to make his yarn dreams come true, as he did for „Yorkshire“: „It’s a yarn that reminds me of my childhood“, Bo said. „My parents used to work with British yarns, and when I started developing yarns myself, I wanted to create one that was just like the ones I knew as a child.“

Two years ago, when Bo and his wife Marianne were about to reach the age to receive a pension in Denmark, they started looking for someone who would continue their work with BC Garn, keeping its northern European character and emphasis on natural yarns and fibers, organic and certified wherever possible. They found their dream candidate in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the north-eastern part of Germany: Britta Kremke, confessed lover of luxury fibers, experienced yarn trader and developer, was Bo’s preferred candidate continue his business.
Just like Bo, Britta grew up surrounded by yarn: Her mother owned a yarn store, she crocheted her first sweater when she was 8 years old, and when she finished her training as a banker at 21 she could not wait to return to the world of wool. She took over a small yarn store, but had to give up pretty soon as knitting was on the decline at the time. Britta decided to go to college and worked in a marketing agency in eastern Germany. During that time, her knitting took a couple of involuntary breaks: „There were just no yarn stores in rural post-socialist Germany at the time“, Britta said. „But I made sure to stock up on yarn whenever I travelled!“

A couple of years later, online yarn stores started to pop up and came to Britta’s rescue – which made her think that it would be a cool idea to have one herself, with luxury yarns like alpaca and cashmere, „just yarns I wanted to use myself“, Britta said. Soon she started importing yarns from all over the world and began to wholesale her goods to other yarn stores. Her own brand „Kremke Soul Wool“ featuring yarns she developed herself, followed a little later. Choosing beautiful fiber, working with small spinning mills, always keeping sustainability and eco-friendlyness in mind, the goal being a pleasant, luxurious experience while knitting – that’s what Britta is really good at. BC Garn founder Bo Carstensen was impressed, and he found that his company would be in very good hands with Britta, who has been using her talents for BC Garn since spring 2018. A big task, but a very charming one as well: „BC Garn has a unique look, simple but very clear, so I am very happy to take it on“ Britta said. Her ideas for the future include new organic and breed-specific yarns that will be GOTS-certified (a very strict environmental and social standard for textiles), „everything very natural, not your usual superwash“, Britta said. We are excited to find out more!

Wer gerne auf Wollmärkten im ganzen Land unterwegs ist, kennt ihre farbenfrohen Garne ganz bestimmt: Nicole Seelbach, auch bekannt als „Buntwurm“, liebt es, ihre bunten Kreationen „live“ in Szene zu setzen und freut sich an den Reaktionen der Strickerinnen. „Das macht mir einfach riesigen Spaß!“, sagt Nicole. Ihre Vorliebe für Wollfeste könnte auch damit zu tun haben, dass Nicole Meisterin in einem Beruf ist, in dem es gerade darum geht, bei vorbeischlendernden Menschen Aufmerksamkeit zu wecken. „Schilder- und Lichtreklameherstellerin“ hat sie gelernt, ein Querschnitt aus dem, was Elektriker, Drucker, Metallbauer, Lackierer und Schriftsetzer machen.
Auch Farben und Ästhetik spielten dabei eine Rolle, und da sind wir schon wieder ganz nah am Thema Wollefärben. „Nach der Meisterprüfung bin ich für den Job nach Hamburg gegangen, und da habe ich wieder angefangen zu stricken“, erzählt Nicole. Sie stöberte gerne in den Hamburger Wollgeschäften, aber eines Tages konnte sie einfach nicht die Farbe finden, die sie für ihr nächstes Projekt im Kopf hatte. „Das war ein Curry- oder Senfgelb, das gab’s damals einfach nicht zu kaufen – und ich wollte unbedingt für eine Freundin eine Mütze und Armstulpen zum Geburtstag daraus stricken, weil ihr diese Farbe so gut stand.“ Und so färbte Nicole ihr erstes Garn, und es war gleich ein Erfolg. „Es klappte – und meine Freundin hat sich riesig gefreut!“
Dass handgefärbte Garne ein Trend sind, war Nicole damals noch gar nicht bewusst: „Das merkte ich erst, nachdem ich auch mal auf einem Wollfest war!“ Nicole begann, am Wochenende Garn zu färben und es über Facebook zu verkaufen, es kamen immer mehr Wollfeste hinzu, und seit sie 2016 zurück in ihre hessische Heimat zog, ist sie Vollzeit-Färberin: „Noch klappt es ganz gut in meiner Färbewerkstatt bei uns im Keller – aber ich merke schon, dass die bald zu klein wird…“
Wenn Nicole selbst zu den Stricknadeln greift, kommt meistens Alpaka-Garn zum Einsatz: „Davon bin ich ein großer Fan, egal ob Lacegarn für ein Tuch oder was Dickeres.“ Garne aus den Fasern spezieller Schafsrassen findet sie ebenfalls reizvoll: „Für mich darf das Garn gern etwas griffiger sein – mir ist eher wichtig, dass die Schafe tierfreundlich gehalten werden.“ Mit industriell gefärbten Garnen strickt sie gar nicht mehr, „die haben für mich völlig ihren Reiz verloren! Dafür werde ich öfters bei Handfärbe-Kolleginnen schwach und kaufe bei denen für meine Projekte ein – denn jede hat ihre eigene Handschrift.“
Nicole legt großen Wert darauf, in ihrem Sortiment Garne für alle Strick-Bedürfnisse anzubieten: Yak- und Cellulosegarne für die Schafwollallergiker sowie Garne mit Baumwoll- und Bambusfasern findet man bei ihr genau so wie stabile Sockengarne und superweiches Merino. „Beim Färben möchte ich mich ständig weiterentwickeln und herausfordern“, sagt Nicole. Wie sich welche Faser im Färbebad verhält, wie man welchen Effekt erzielt und das schönste Ergebnis – das ist für Nicole eine Frage von Sachkenntnis und Handwerkskunst, und da ist sie sehr ehrgeizig. Aber wie ihr Tag in der Färbeküche verläuft, hängt auch immer ein bisschen von ihrer Stimmung ab: „Wenn mir nach was Buntem ist, färbe ich Sockengarn – und wenn es gedeckter sein soll, arbeite ich an Tuch- oder Pulligarnen.“ Im Moment färbt sie am liebsten Beerentöne von Ultraviolett bis Flieder – „das ist lustig, denn wenn ich für mich selbst etwas stricke, nehme ich eher Herbsttöne“.

If you have been to a fiber festival in Germany, chances are that you know her colorful yarns: Nicole Seelbach, also known as „Buntwurm“ (in German it means something like „color-worm“…), loves to present her creations live and enjoys to see how knitters react to them: „That’s just so much fun!“ she said. Her love for fiber fests may stem from her professional background: Nicole has trained and acquired a „Meister“ title granted by the German Guild for her profession, which deals with creating and installing illuminated signs – so she’s part electrician, printer, metal worker, painter and typesetter. And she really knows who to catch the attention of people strolling by!
Colors and design were also a part of her training, so that brings us close to the topic of dyeing wool. „After my Meister exams I took a job in Hamburg, and that’s when I started to knit again“, Nicole said. She loved to browse the yarn stores in Hamburg, but one day she just could not find the color that she had in mind for her next project. „I was looking for a mustard yellow, and at the time it was so out of fashion that there was just no yarn available in that color.“ But Nicole really wanted to make a hat and arm warmers in that specific color to give a friend on her birthday – so she dyed it herself. It worked: „My friend loved her gift!“
At the time, Nicole was not really aware that hand dyed yarns were a thing: „I realized that they were kind of trending when I went to my first fiber festival“, Nicole said. She started dyeing yarns on the weekends and sold them on facebook and on small fiber festivals, and since she returned to her native close to Frankfurt in 2016, she has been dyeing full-time: „My dyeing workshop in our basement works just fine – for now! I have a feeling that I will grow out of it pretty soon…“
When Nicole knits, she loves to use yarn with alpaca fiber: „I am a big fan of laceweight alpaca for a shawl and also of the heavier qualities.“ She also likes breed-specific yarns from sheep, even if they tend to have a bit more structure to them than merino yarns: „To me, one of the most important aspects when choosing a yarn is that it has been produced in an animal-friendly fashion“, she said. Nicole is not tempted by industrially dyed yarns anymore, but regularly shops at other handdyers‘ booths: „I love that every one of us has their own style of dyeing yarn, and I think it’s super fun to knit with them.“
Nicole’s yarns cater to every knitter’s needs: She carries yak and viscose yarns for those who are allergic to wool, cotton and bamboo blends, sturdy sockyarns and supersoft merino. „I constantly strive to improve my dyeing skills and to challenge myself“, she said. How a yarn behaves in the dyepot, how to achieve a certain effect and the best result – for Nicole, that’s a question of knowledge, experience and the art of the craft. But it also depends on her mood how a day in the dyeing workshop will go: „If I feel like using lots of colors, I will choose a sockyarn. Otherwise, I will work on yarns more suitable for shawls and sweaters“, she said. Right now, her favorite colors to dye are berry tones from deep purple to light lavender, „which is funny, because for myself I would always choose colors from the autumn pallette“, Nicole said.

Große Neuigkeiten: Der Strickmich! Club geht 2019 weiter – und wir werden noch exklusiver: Edle, weiche Fasern, und spannende, neue Designs. Neu ist in diesem Jahr, dass es die besonderen Garn-Färbungen nach ihrem Erscheinen im Club nirgends mehr zu kaufen geben wird.
Die Garne werden speziell für den Strickmich! Club 2019 und die neuen Anleitungen, die ich damit designe, gefärbt und sind in der Clubfarbe für immer und alle Zeit nur für Clubmitglieder verfügbar. Die Färberinnen und der Strickmich! Shop werden die Garne – anders als in den vergangenen Clubs – niemals im freien Verkauf anbieten. Nur Clubmitglieder erhalten die Möglichkeit, von dem exklusiven Garn weitere Stränge nachzubestellen. Im Club 2019 bekommst du mit der „Single Yarn“-Option insgesamt 485 g Garn (mindestens 100 g je Lieferung). Die Anleitung ist genau auf das Garn abgestimmt – mit der einfachen Menge des Garns kannst Du das Projekt in der Größe stricken, wie sie auf den Fotos der Anleitung zu sehen ist. Falls du deine Tücher und Cowls gerne größer magst oder noch ein zweites Projekt zum Verschenken stricken möchtest, kannst du die „Double Yarn“-Option wählen: Dann bekommst du jeweils die doppelte Menge Garn, also insgesamt 970 g (mindestens 200 g je Lieferung).
Die superweichen, edlen und sehr angenehm zu tragenden Garne, die wir diesmal ausgewählt haben, enthalten Fasern vom Merino- und Bluefaced-Leicester-Schaf, Seide, Baumwolle und Viskose aus Bambusfasern.

Für mich als Designerin ist der Strickmich! Club ist mein Herzensprojekt, und das schon seit fünf Jahren: Hier arbeite ich mit den schönsten Garnen von den aufregendsten Färberinnen und Garnherstellerinnen der Welt, die extra für mich und meine Mitglieder gefärbt wurden, und ich kann den Strickerinnen ein kleines Gesamtkunstwerk aus Garn, Farbe, Design und Anleitung bieten. Ein Traum! Im Jahr 2019 haben wir besonders schöne und luxuriöse Garne ausgewählt, und ich kann es kaum erwarten, damit neue, spannende Modelle für unsere Strickerinnen zu entwickeln. Ich freue mich über jedes einzelne Clubmitglied und möchte jeder ein tolles Club- und Strickerlebnis ermöglichen: Von der Auswahl der Garne über die Farben, Design, Strickerlebnis, Anleitung, Layout, Druck, Päckchenpacken und Versand – ich habe jeden Schritt im Auge und sorge persönlich dafür, dass am Ende alles stimmt. Exciting news: Strickmich! Club will continue in 2019, and we will be more exclusive than ever: luxurious, soft fibers and exciting new designs by Martina Behm. For the first time in Strickmich! Club’s history, the yarn colors that will never be available anywhere outside the club.
The yarn will be dyed especially for Strickmich! Club and the new pattern I will design with it. New in 2019: The colorway will also be exclusive to the Club for all time, i. e. it will not be available from the dyers or from Strickmich! Shop. Only Club members will be able to order additional skeins in our Club Shop. The 2019 Club will deliver 485 g of yarn in total (minimum 100 g per shipment) if you choose the Single Yarn option. If you like your shawls and cowls very big, we recommend opting for „Double Yarn“: You will get twice the amount of yarn (970 g in total, minimum 200 g per shipment). Martina always includes instructions on how to make the club projects bigger.
The supersoft and pleasant yarns we have chosen for the 2019 club contain fiber from Merino and Bluefaced Leicester Sheep, Silk, Cotton and Bamboo.

For me as a designer, Strickmich! Club is the one project that is closest to my heart, and it has been for the past five years: I work with the most beautiful yarns that were created especially for me and my Club members by the most gifted dyers and yarn makers of the planet, and it enables me to provide knitters with a perfect combination of yarn, color, design and pattern. A dream come true! I am especially excited about our 2019 yarns, as they are extra luxurious and soft – I can’t wait to cast on the samples for the new club patterns! I am happy about every single member and am striving to make the club experience a great one for every one of them. Starting with the choice of dyers, yarn base, color, design, layout, knitting experience, packing the cute little parcels and shipping them – I do work on every single step and personally do take care that in the end, everything adds up. That’s very important to me, because every parcel should bring you pure knitting joy!

Farbspiele mit ObviousObvious Color Play
Es hat eine ganze Weile und viele Stunden mit meinem Buntstiftkasten gebraucht, bis ich mich endlich entscheiden konnte, wie ich die Farben bei meiner neuen Strickanleitung „Obvious“ anordnen wollte. Das Braun sollte nicht neben dem Grün liegen, aber auf jeden Fall neben dem Brombeerton, und das Schwarz an zwei Stellen, wegen des schönen Kontrasts, aber immer darauf achten, dass die Wolle ausreichen wird… Das hat sehr viel Spaß gemacht! Falls du deine Farbkombination für „Obvious“ selbst aussuchen möchtest (im Strickmich! Shop sind alle lieferbaren Farben vorrätig!) habe ich hier für dich eine Schemazeichnung zum Ausdrucken, die du nach Herzenslust in deinen Lieblingsfarben anmalen kannst. Auch mehrfach, falls gewünscht. Viel Spaß dabei und beim anschließenden Obvious-Stricken!

It took me quite a while and a couple of hours with my crayons to figure out how I wanted to arrange the colors in my new knitting pattern „Obvious“: The Brown should not be next to the Green, but the Berry, and I wanted the Black to appear twice because it made suche a nice contrast – but I had to pay attention on how much yarn I was using in each segment… It was fun! If you would like to choose your own color combination (take your pick from the entire Rosy Green Wool Color Palette that we have in Strickmich! Shop), I have uploaded an uncolored schematic for you to print out and play with. Have fun!

Obvious
Eine riesige, weiche Stola, ganz in kraus-rechts und aus einem superschönen, soften Garn in Bio-Qualität in wunderbaren Farben: Das ist Obvious! Die Idee dazu kam mir, als ich über der Schemazeichnung für die Hülle „One for the Books“ meditiert habe, die ich für den Strickplaner 2018 entworfen hatte. Das Prinzip müsste auch als Tuch funktionieren, dachte ich mir, das war ganz offensichtlich (englisch: „obvious“), und so habe ich aus fünf Strängen Rosy Green Wool Cheeky Merino Joy dieses Riesentuch gestrickt. Es ist so toll geworden und bietet so viele Tragemöglichkeiten – ich kann es kaum abwarten, dass die Tage wieder kälter werden, denn dann wird mir dieses Tuch in meinem eher kühlen Büro gute Dienste leisten. Und klasse unterm Mantel aussehen. Oder über der Bluse. Oder, oder… offensichtlich, oder?
Das Stricken ist ganz entspannt, bis auf ein paar Zu- oder Abnahmen sind keine besonderen Techniken gefragt. Ich würde sagen: anfängertauglich! Allerdings braucht man schon ein wenig Ausdauer, denn es sind insgesamt gut 1500 Meter Garn zu verstricken.
Die Strickanleitung gibt’s bei Ravelry und im Strickmich! Shop – dort führen wir auch eine limitierte Anzahl von Kits in zwei schönen Farbkombinationen, und natürlich die gesamte Farbpalette von Rosy Green Wool zum Selbstaussuchen. Viel Freude damit!
A big, soft stole knit in garter stitch, out of a wonderful organic yarn in great colors: That’s Obvious! I had the idea for this shawl when I was casually staring at the schematic of the knitted book cover „One for the Books“ that I designed for Strickplaner (my knitting planner) 2018: That should work as a stole, obviously… and it did! I used one of my favorite yarns, Rosy Green Wool Cheeky Merino Joy for it. It turned out enormous, and it’s super versatile. I can’t wait until the days will finally get a little colder, so I get to wear mine. It will be super useful in my cold-ish office. And look great under my winter coat, just adding a splash of color. And look awesome thrown over a blouse… obviously!
The knitting is really simple, there are only a few increases and decreases to work. You will need a little stamina, though, as there are 1500 m of yarn to knit!

Strickplaner 2019
Wir haben zwar erst Mitte 2018, aber ich konnte es trotzdem kaum erwarten, die 2019-er Ausgabe des Strickplaners in den Händen zu halten – und hier ist sie!
Ich bin ganz begeistert von dem neuen Umschlagsmaterial, das wir ausgesucht haben: Es fühlt sich an und sieht aus wie Textil, ist aber schmutzabweisendes vinylbeschichtetes Papier. Wir haben wieder die zauberhaften Aquarellmotive von Julie Levesque als Vor- und Nachsatzpapier, das Layout bietet jetzt noch mehr Platz zum Schreiben, und wir haben uns ein paar neue, nützliche Extraseiten für Strickerinnen einfallen lassen: Wunschlisten für Garne, Strickbücher und Zubehör und Seiten für Strick-Events, Blogs und Wollgeschäfte, außerdem Seiten mit Maßen der Leute, für die du am liebsten strickst.
Und natürlich haben wir wieder mit den Kalenderprofis von weekview in München zusammengearbeitet, um den Strickplaner zu gestalten. Denn das Konzept hat mich gleich begeistert, als ich meinen ersten weekview-Planer hatte: Prioritäten setzen, nicht zu viel vornehmen, Pausen und Ruhetage einplanen, und natürlich Zeit fürs Stricken. Und das alles ganz einfach, ohne Ballast und Chichi. Das wollte ich auch – aber mit Extra-Seiten für Strickerinnen, mit Strick-Zitaten und Strick-Inspiration. Mit dem Strickplaner habe ich mir diesen Traum erfüllt – und hoffe, dass er vielen anderen Strickerinnen ebenfalls ein nützlicher Begleiter ist. Denn der Strickplaner so handlich, dass er bequem auch in kleine Taschen passt – du hast ihn immer dabei, und alle Infos über Termine und deine Strickprojekte sind sofort griffbereit. Ein unschätzbarer Vorteil, den großformatigere Planer so nicht bieten…! (Und, nebenbei: das alles unabhängig vom Ladezustand irgendwelcher Batterien – und der Versuchung, doch schon wieder in den Tiefen von Social Media abzutauchen.)

I know – 2018 is only half over, but I just could not wait to get my hands on the 2019 edition of Strickplaner… and now it’s here! I am so happy and excited about the new cover material that we chose: It looks and feels like textile, but is a stain-resistant vinyl coated paper that will have your planner look great for many, many months. We have the über-cute watercolor motifs by artist Julie Levesque in our endpapers, the layout is functional, clever and clean as ever (and gives you more space to write than last year!), and we have created more special pages for your knitting needs: wish lists for yarn, knitting books and accessories, lists for podcasts, blogs and events and extra pages where you can jot down measurements of your loved ones.
